This was one of those pipes that started off on the back burner. There are times when I’m working on a commissioned pipe and either I need time for glue or finishes to cure before I can move on. This was one of the pipes that filled up the hours and sometimes minutes between.

This briar comes from the stock of a pipe maker that went out of business back east thirty years ago and the briar itself is between thirty and fifty years old, so very well cured indeed! When I bought the blocks I didn’t really know what to expect, but I soon found that some, like this one, had absolutely stunning grain.

In the case of this pipe the block really dictated what I could do with the pipe. It was cut as a cross grain block and in my opinion the birdseye was just too nice not to try to find a design that would highlight it. There aren’t too many designs that highlight cross grain birdseye better than the blowfish so I went for it. I decided to incorporate a few elements that weren’t really part of my more recent work, if for no other reason than to keep some fresh ideas percolating through. I added a boxwood shank treatment and a saddle bit stem. The stem in particular added a nice conventional touch to a rather unconventional shape.

The block I started with was quite small so this pipe is also on the smaller side and can be held in the teeth easily. The diameter of the tobacco chamber is also a bit on the smaller side, but more than deep enough to give a good long smoke with a flake tobacco. There aren’t really any negatives that come to mind with this pipe, it’s got beautiful grain, perfect drilling, a comfortable bit and looks great if I do say so myself.
