Grade 2 Smooth Pipe: Sold
Stem: Tiger Lucite When it rains it pours, this is the second grade 2 pipe I've made in the last 2. Unusual to say the least, the pipe gods must be smiling on my briar. This pipe has been drawn on a block of briar since before Christmas just waiting for me to get around to it. The grain just seemed so perfect for an asymmetrical poker that there was never any question in my mind as to what it would be. Pokers are one of my absolute favourite classic shapes. There are so many possibilities to play with as far as shape is concerned. Bulldogs, billiards, and a lot of the other classic shapes lock you in as far as design elements are concerned. Sure you can make a squat bulldog or a chubby billiard, but there are elements that have to remain in order for them to not be considered to be a freehand design. The Poker and Cherrywood shapes give a lot more wiggle room design wise while still being considered to be a poker. The last few pipes that have come out of the workshop were lightweights, neither one weighing over 35 grams. For the sake of variety this one went the opposite way weighing in at a hefty 73 grams and having more than an ample tobacco chamber. For you folks who like a 2-hour smoking marathon this is your pipe. I don’t often make pipes with the plateau rim left on, but when I look at this pipe I can’t think of it with a smooth rim. It just wouldn’t be right. The plateau roughness is complimented when looking at the shank face that shows the roughened exterior of the morta log. Again, it was just a design touch that feels right when you look at the pipe as a whole. The grain in the briar speaks for itself. The briar is completely clean without a single sand spot or pit. The grain is stunning and in a sick and compulsive sort of way I wish I could sand the rim of the bowl to have a look at the birdseye underneath. The negatives in this pipe are more in the nature of personal nit-pickyness, but they are there. This pipe sits, but it has a fair bit of weight in the shank due to the morta and copper ring so it is a bit on the tippy side for a sitter. The only other small issue is with the transition between the shank and the copper ring. The glue line there is slightly thicker than what I’d generally like to see. All of these are minor issues that are probably more in the nature of me being anal than any real drawbacks. In the end this is a great-looking pipe that will smoke well, has a nice open draw, and a comfortable bit.
