As a pipe maker I find that often I have designs that evolve and change over time and the Firedrop series is a perfect example. I really like the Firedrop design; it’s been around for quite some time now and I’m still not in the least bit bored with it.
This latest incarnation is a full bent – plus! That’s right, this is actually bent fully past 180 degrees. It’s not common to find a full 180 degree bent pipe and even rarer that one actually has the stem overhanging the bowl. The engineering on this pipe took a lot of time to do right -- and yes, it will pass a cleaner. The cleaner will need a twist, but it will pass it without much difficulty.
With such an extreme bend there is virtually no leverage on the teeth and this pipe hangs from the teeth very comfortably. I could certainly use a pipe like this in my workshop! The briar on this particular Firedrop is very nice, good birdseye and some beautiful flame grain along the sides. Also this is some extremely clean briar with nary a sand pit or even a noticeable flaw to be seen.
As with my most recent Firedrops this pipe has both a removable stem and shank extension for potential reaming down the road. The bit is comfortable and the draw nice and open. Another one that I wish I could keep.
