Christmas is upon us once again. It was a close thing if I would even be putting out a Christmas pipe this year and because of this, this year’s pipe will be a series of 1. This year’s pipe is something different than my standard fare. First, the shape is a bit more classic than usual, and I made a brass shank extension rather than the Bethlehem Olive wood that I have used in years past.
I was thinking of the Cutty and Prince shapes when I began thinking of this year’s Christmas pipe, both shapes have always appealed to me. The design concept was to add a bit more traditional design while still keeping with my style of pipe making. I wanted a pipe that was elegant, nicely grained and straightforward and I think this pipe succeeds very well in fulfilling those criteria.
The grain on this pipe is very nice; if there wasn’t a weakening of the grain on the bottom left of the bowl it could have been a grade 2. Other than two small sand spots the briar was extremely clean and well grained.
It was also nice to work with brass; it has been a few years now and it’s nice to get back to it. I think it really adds to the overall effect. The draw is nice and open, the bit is thin and comfortable, and the pipe sits very will in the hand.
